CVYC Executive Applicaitons Available!
Thank you for taking the time to read about the City of Victoria Youth Council’s recruitment campaign for 2010. As you may know, the City of Victoria Youth Council (CVYC) is officially supported by the City of Victoria as its youth leadership initiative focused on engaging and supporting young people to act as bridges between the youth community and city hall by bringing forward concerns, challenges and issues currently facing youth in the within the municipality. The CVYC is focused on enabling youth to get actively involved in civic issues through action within the municipal system and the greater community.

Members of the CVYC gain important hands-on skills through working with diverse populations and refine interpersonal communication and networking skills. Members of the CVYC receive free training and have access to a variety of innovative and authentic career-building opportunities through their term on the council.

The CVYC is currently recruiting for its 2010-2011 term. We are seeking interested and socially conscious youth 12-24 who are looking to make a difference in their community, through civic political structures, Council and staff. The CVYC’s work is purposeful and innovative, working diligently to act as a resource for youth who want to navigate the city system and build relationships and communicate effectively with city staff and community organizations all over Greater Victoria. In the past the CVYC has facilitated community forums, created civic literacy resources, and surveyed the youth community of the City of Victoria. This year the CVYC will be conducting a Youth Values Survey to assess the priorities of youth who live, work, go to school, access services, or hang out in the City of Victoria. We will be using the results of this survey to inform our own strategic priorities for the year, and we will be sharing our results with City of Victoria staff and elected officials.

No prior experience is required nor is there a fee for participation. To download an Applicaiton Package check out http://www.YouthCore.ca and search 'CVYC' or contact youth[at]bchealthycommunities.ca

Last Executive Meeting for the 2009-10 Term!
The City of Victoria Youth Council Executive met on June 10 to wrap up our term and to celebrate our many successes this year. We were joined by Jodi Mucha, Director of BC Healthy Communities, Kimberly Stratford, our City Staff Liaison, and Councillor Sonya Chandler.

First of all, we took a few minutes to recognize Councillor Sonya Chandler, who will be moving to Europe soon to study sustainable health systems for her master’s degree. Councillor Chandler has been our Council Liaison as well as an avid supporter of the CVYC since our inception. She has given us so much support and is a huge reason for the CVYC's success. Thank you, Sonya!!!

Jodi Mucha then further explained to the council our transition from LifeCycles to BC Healthy Communities. Our new relationship with BCHC is a very exciting partnership--already, as a result of our new partnership, we have had a meeting with Mayor Dean Fortin, Minister Bill Bennett, and first Vice President of UBCM Barbara Steele to recognize Local Government Awareness Week. We look forward to being even more involved with BCHC in the future!

During our yummy-food-break, we reflected upon our many successes in the past year. We brainstormed on post-it notes and stuck them on the wall. The result: wow, what a year! Our Justice Activism in Youth Legal Literacy project utilized grants from the SPARK grant program and the United Way of Greater Victoria and revamped our Street Legal booklet. We printed thousands of copies and are currently distributing them. We also created a workshop and held several throughout the year. The CVYC made the transition from LifeCycles to BC Healthy Communities, and this partnership has already borne fruit. We made a presentation to City Council. We reviewed our governance structure and made key changes. We implemented our new membership structure with Supporting Members and Executive Members. The list goes on and on; what an exciting and successful year!

However, the best has yet to come! The Executive may not be meeting for the summer, but that certainly doesn't mean the CVYC is inactive. Over the summer, we will be working hard on our youth survey for a fall launch, as well as planning our recruitment in September. Stay posted! - Jun 09th, 2010
JAYLL Workshops Begin!
CVYC project JAYLL (Justice Activism in Youth Legal Literacy, formerly the Legal Literacy Project), led by CVYC members Ronnie, Sartu, Ben, Matsuko and Sadaf, began a series of workshops today. Today we delivered a workshop to 100 students at Central Middle School. Our interactive workshop includes a skit, explanation of our Street Legal booklet, and a question game.

Our Street Legal booklet is a tool that facilitates youth-police relations by outlining the first steps of the youth justice system and clearly defining the rights of both youth and the police. We are distributing this booklet to youth througout Victoria. If you would like to book a workshop or get Street Legal booklets, please contact us! - Mar 25th, 2010
CVYC Begins Planning for New Youth Survey
One of the primary functions of the CVYC is to act as a bridge between youth and City of Victoria. The CVYC is committed to youth voice, and as such, we are beginning work on a new, statistically relevant youth survey to update the previous CVYC Municipal Youth Survey of 2005/2006. Our goal is to have at least 700 respondents so that the CVYC can act as a legitimate voice of youth in Victoria. Stay tuned! - Feb 17th, 2010
